Also, if you really want to watch Kite Liberator, you will have to watch it as English subbed. Last thing to point out is that there is very little character development, leading to a very one-dimensional cast. I found that the premise of “young high school student has powers of death” is incredibly overused and it doesn’t work for this film at all. The film’s pacing is definitely off, as it switches from Monaka working at a cafe, murdering people, and a group of scientists on a space station. The film is quite short, even by standards in 2007, with the film’s total run time of 58 mins. The film is the spiritual sequel to 1998’s Kite, and it doesn’t build on the original very much. Kite Liberator is one of my least satisfying picks late night on Netflix. I would like to point out that the writers to mix in an interesting space plot line with some semi-likable characters, which was a good choice to balance with their boring murder mix. I didn’t expect it even after I read the description and especially after I started watching. What really caught my eye was that there is a decent amount of gore when Monaka is murdering people. Kite Liberator has very few things going in its favor, even for a straight to dvd film. I want to say that Kite is a fucking crazy film, and the graphic rape/sex scenes are over the top and not okay. I want to point out that Kite has two different releases, one censored and one including 15 minutes of hentai. Lets just say, without spoiling too much (even though its been 16 years) I was rooting for Sawa right from the get go. While the film isn’t very long (45 min without hentai scenes, 60 min with hentai) the film packs as much as it can into the short amount of time it does have. The film is gritty, filled with gore, and very graphic. Kite focuses on the exploitation of school girls and definitely uses that genre to its advantage. Kite is the first entry in the Kite series, followed by the critically panned Kite: Liberator (You can check out my review at the beginning of the article).
